What’s the Bible?
The Bible is God’s revelation to man. The Bible (Tanakh and the B’rit Chadashah) is unique compared to other religious writings in that it was written by 40 different Jewish men over 1600 years over three continents. Other religious writings which claim to be divinely inspired are written by one person. These 40 Jewish men who wrote the Bible came from very different walks of life – herdsmen, princes, tax collector, physician, military general, etc. Yet, there is a consistent flow throughout all the scriptures, which would support one divine author. God explains it this way in His Bible…in 2 Peter 1: 20-21, God tells us, ” Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
The Bible’s main message is there is one God, the creator of Heavens and Earth and all that are in them – including man. God desires to have an eternal relationship with his creation – man. Man by his nature is a sinner – everyone has sinned and falls short of the glory of God. No matter how many good deeds we as humans can complete, our good deeds do not remove our sinful deeds of record. God loves man and wants to be with him forever, yet God as a perfect judge must punish the guilty and He can not let sin into His Heaven. God solved this problem through the person of Jesus Christ. His Hebrew name is Yeshua HaMashiach. Yeshua is fully God and fully man. Yeshua (Jesus) suffered and died on the cross and rose from the dead to pay the penalty for our sins and purchase a place for us in Heaven which he offers to us as a free gift. For those who believe and trust in Yeshua alone to get themselves into Heaven, God promises to be with them forever. Once a person has truly trusted in Yeshua for their eternal life, God seals him with His Holy Spirit (the helper) who will help guide the believer along with God’s word (the Bible) for all his days here on Earth. Probably one of the most popular verses of the Bible, John 3:16, says it like this, “For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
